Japanese Phonology Constraint Domains and Structure Preservation
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article sketches some of the most important aspects of the sound pattern of Modern Japanese, focussing on segmental processes and restrictions. Even at this basic level of phonological organization, an empirically and conceptually adequate description requires explicit reference to the large-scale stratification of the Japanese lexicon into morphemes of different classes. A secondary purpose of this article is to show that a formal explication of the structure of the phonological lexicon — a complex network of partially overlapping phonological regularities of various degrees of generality — calls for significant emendation and extension of traditional views on morpheme classes and necessitates the development of a constraint-based model of lexical organization.

On Clause and Intonational Phrase in Japanese: Th e Syntactic Grounding of Prosodic Constituent Structure
Th is paper reviews evidence from recent research on Japanese sentence prosody, in particular Kawahara and Shinya (2008) on coordinated clauses and Kubo (1989) et seq, Deguchi and Kitagawa (2002) et seq, Ishihara (2002) et seq and Hirotani (2003) et seq on matrix and embedded wh-questions, which suggests that syntactic clauses correspond to a domain for certain of the phonological and phonetic ...
متن کاملFinite-State Phonology In HPSG
Attention on constraint-based grammar formalisms such as Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) has focussed on syntax and semantics to the exclusion of phonology. This paper investigates the incorporation of a non-procedural theory of phonology into HPSG, based on the ‘one-level’ model of Bird & Ellison (1992). The standard rule-representation distinction is replaced by the description-ob...
متن کاملLevels vs. Domains: The Case of Kashaya Vowel Length
In this paper I argue that correlations between particular morphological and phonological processes, which lexical phonology captures by means of lexical levels, should be recast within Optimality Theory in terms of constraint domains, i.e. substrings of the surface representation which have different constraint rankings. I base the argument on three processes in Kashaya affect vowel length in ...
متن کاملJapanese Subjects and Information Structure : A Constraint-based Approach
This paper is concerned with how topic/focus articulation should be optimally integrated into Japanese grammar. Based on Engdahl and Vallduvı́’s (1996) Information Structure, we propose an analysis with the following characteristics: (i) information structure is an integral part of Japanese grammar and interacts in principled ways with both syntax and phonology, (ii) the representations of topic...
متن کاملThe Optimal Initial State
2 ABSTRACT The 'initial state' of a child's phonology has been much discussed but rarely empirically investigated within an Optimality Theory framework. The most common assumption has been that, at the onset of word production, all markedness constraints strictly dominate all faithfulness constraints. In this paper, the early phonologies of 20 children, five each learning one of four languages ...
